What is the HRRL?

The Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL) is an annual series of road races for all runners from participating clubs in the County of Hampshire, on the central south coast of England. Since 2008-9 there have been twelve races in the season, from August to July.

Current committee officers:

  • Chair – Malcom Price (Lordshill Road Runners)
  • Vice Chair – Sarah-Jayne Law (Fareham Running Club)
  • Secretary – Sari Giering (Lordshill Road Runners)
  • Treasurer – Ellis Meades-Woolley (Fareham Running Club)
  • Results – Chris Jochem (Lordshill Road Runners)

Who can participate?

Clubs that are based in Hampshire or just over the county border can take part. Running clubs who wish to participate in the HRRL do so by contacting the HRRL treasurer or secretary.

Runners who wish to participate in the League should join a member club of choice. Running clubs embrace runners of all standards and ages, although some do not cater for juniors. They are typically very social and friendly, and welcome new members who want to run for whatever reason.

Unaffiliated runners and runners from non-participating clubs are also welcome to enter HRRL races, but only HRRL-registered clubs and their runners are included in the League results.

How does the HRRL work?

The League allows teams and individuals to compete throughout the season.

Club teams (4 runners per team) are made up of their finishers based on the finish position (rather than pre-determined named runners). Teams score points based on the finishing positions of their runners, and the team with the fastest runners wins a race. The League winner is decided at the end of the season. Club teams can have multiple teams. Teams comprise a wide range of runners of all standards, abilities and ages.

Individual runners are also automatically considered for the individual league. They score points based on their finishing positions in the races. Any affiliated runner completing at least 7 races (though see league rules) within the season will qualify for the individual league.

There are separate leagues for women and men, both for teams and individuals.

What are the races?

Races for each season are nominated and selected by the member clubs at the start of the year. Races have to be licensed through England Athletics and organized by a running club or other non-profit organization. The final selection of races varies in distances from short (e.g. 5 miles) to long (e.g. half marathon) and takes place from around September to July the following year.

What is the Team League Structure?

HRRL is divided into two team leagues (A and B). Team leagues have multiple divisions (e.g. A1, A2 and A3) with 10 clubs per division (except for the bottom division, which comprises 10-19 clubs depending on current membership). Teams are promoted or relegated between divisions according to the league rules.
